Santa Monica, California – To help wind up the fifteenth season of its community reading program Santa Monica Reads, the Santa Monica Public Library is pleased to present Women to Watch Out For, a women in comics panel discussion, on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. in the Main Library’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Auditorium, 601 Santa Monica Boulevard.
For as long as there has been a comics industry, there have also been comics that appealed to women, as well as like-minded men. But the representation of women comics creators in the industry has been a spottier proposition. Join us as we welcome five comics writers and illustrators, who just happen to be women, and talk about the status of women in the industry, their experience within it, how things have gone in the past and what things look like for the future. Guest panelists include: Cecil Castellucci (Shade the Changing Girl, The Plain Janes), Joëlle Jones (Lady Killer, Super Girl), Irene Koh (The Legend of Korra), Sarah Kuhn (Fresh Romance, Heroine Complex), and Jen Wang (In Real Life, Koko Be Good). A book/comics sale and signing follows.
This discussion is a part of Santa Monica Reads, the wildly popular community reading program that has invited Santa Monicans to read and discuss the same book together for the better part of a generation now. This year’s program concludes on March 30. This year’s featured novel is Alison Bechdel’s graphic memoir Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, a moving comics-format memoir depicting the author’s youthful coming of age and her complicated relationship with her father.
This program is free and open to all ages. Seating is first come, first served. Santa Monica Public Library is wheelchair accessible. For disabled services, call Library Administration at (310) 458-8606 at least one week prior to event. The Main Library is directly served by Big Blue Bus routes 1, R10, and 18.
